How to Make Those Big Goals Happen

Do you ever have a big idea that just won't go away?

Maybe it's a business or a blog you want to start. Or maybe it's a huge adventurous trip you want to take. Maybe it's not a big goal but it's just a project that you want to finish that you can never get around to.

A friend asked me this recently, "How do you take a big idea and turn it into something you are actually making happen? I don't even know where to start."

I love starting the New Year off with a plan of action. So here are a few tips if you want to do the same...

One // Check Your Ideas

I'm super impulsive so I tend to just jump in and fix all the problems as I go. But a better habit to have is making sure your goals are even a good idea in the first place. Then you don't have to learn the hard way. Use the SMART method if you need to physically get your idea down on paper:

Is your idea (S) Specific? (M) Measurable? (A) Attainable? (R) Realistic? (T) Timely?

It helps to have as many of the details thought out in advance so you don't have to backtrack.

Two // Pray About It

Is God really asking you to do this thing or is there something else you should consider instead? It's not always easy to know His answer but sometimes I definitely sense a peace about a decision or a feeling of "maybe this should wait." It never hurts to ask.

Three // Get Others Involved

I think it is so important to tell someone else your idea. If other know about it they can cheer you on and remind you of your purpose on the hard days. Sometimes I'm afraid that they'll think my dream is too big so I don't always want to share. But even a little skepticism can help in the long run too. I personally get more motivated not to fail even if it's just a stubborn desire to prove others wrong.

Four // Keep Reminders Posted

Remembering your "why" or the purpose behind the goal is so helpful on those days you feel directionless. What's driving you? Who will benefit if you make it happen? What will be the outcome if you don't? Put up a picture, quote or art print in a visible place to remind you of why you need to take action.

Five // Remember Who's Got Your Back

Challenges are going to come up. Usually the minute you start taking action, you'll see a quick and easy escape. But don't give up at the first sign of resistance! Before my great-grandmother passed away, she gave me a card that says "Don't focus on the bigness of your need. Focus on the bigness of your God." When we think about all that is possible with His help, our circumstances seem so much less of an obstacle. We may not be able, but He is.

Six // Take The First Right MOVE

You don't have to know how things will turn out before taking a step forward. Just keep doing the next best thing you know to do. Even if it's a baby step, it will get you a little bit closer to your goal than you were before. If you're not sure what to do first, write down your ultimate result and then work backwards asking yourself "What steps or resources would need to happen before I get here?"

Ready to get started? How about number three - share below what your big idea is so I can help cheer you on!
